December, 1999
Sorry We're a Little Late!!!!! This
edition of the Newsletter arrives just a tad later than normal.
For reasons explained below, things were a little hectic the first weekend
in December. But worth it!!
CSC Swimmers Level Levels: At the Missouri Valley Swimming Level II Championship meet on December 4-5, approximately 67% of all swims from all clubs were faster than their entry times. For our own CSC swimmers, however, the numbers were much higher. In fact, of CSC's 103 individual swims, 86 of them, 76%, were faster than their entry times. The following CSC swimmers led the onslaught: Meg Acton (1), Hilary Ashworth (5-in 5 swims), Sarah Brengarth (5-in 5 swims), Chuck Caldwell (4-in 4 swims), Katherine Caldwell (1), Melissa Chapman (4), Elizabeth D'Agostino (4-in 4 swims), Kayla Durnil (4-in 4 swims), Pharan Evans (5-in 5 swims), Hallie France (1), Sarah Goddard (3), Kate Hallsted (2), Ryan Hallsted (4-in 4 swims), John Jerry (2-in 2 swims), Ashley Mahon (2), Heidi Malizia (5), Sarah Massey (6-in 6 swims), Gina Mattli (3), Margaret Maynard (1-in 1 swim), Brittan Ota (3), Claire Piester (6-in 6 swims), Julie Schenker (6-in 6 swims), Becky Seay (4), Kelly Smith (1), Lyndsey Smith (5). In addition, Chuck Caldwell finished 1st in both the 50 and 100 breast, Melissa Chapman finished 1st in the 100 and 200 breast, the 200 free and the 200 IM, Claire Piester finished 1st in the 50 and 100 Breast and the 100 IM, Julie Schenker finished 1st in the 50 and 100 fly and the 200 IM and Julie and Claire finished in a dead heat for 1st in the 50 free. Hilary Ashworth, Claire Piester, and Julie Schenker all put up USA Swimming "A" times and would be eligible to move up to the Level I meet. Congratulations
to all our swimmers.
CSC Sweet at Sugar Creek CSC swimmers
also smoked the pool at the Sugar Creek meet December 3-5. Results were
not available by the time the Newsletter went to press but we understand
there were lots of best times. Watch for results on the Web Site and next
month.
CSC-Led Kewps Pound Parkway In their first two dual meets of the season, the Hickman Kewpie Boys Swimming and Diving team, led by lots of CSC swimmers swept past Parkway West on December 3 (137-51) and Parkway Central on December 4 (117-68). Watch
the Newsletter in January for a complete list of Hickman's CSC State
Qualifiers.
Level II Meet a Huge Success CSC's hosting of the Missouri Valley Level II Championship Meet was a spectacular success. "You guys really do a great job," is the gist of the quote heard repeatedly from coaches and parents as they left the meet Sunday afternoon. CSC hosted 13 teams, and 360 swimmers for the 2-day meet. There were 1,475 total swims by those 360 swimmers and 991 of those swims were faster than the corresponding entry time. On the financial side, CSC took in $3,514 in entry fees alone, of which the club gets to keep $3,162.60, plus the profits from food concessions, heat sheet sales and CSC's portion of dry concessions from Action Accents and Level II-logo merchandise. Special
thanks to CSC's meet directors Jane Piester and Wendy Castagno, and to
CSC President Lisa Schenker. But they were not alone. All of the following
pitched in to make the meet a success: Ross Smith, Cynthia LaBoile, Brenda
Sanchez, David and Julie Schenker, Hap, Martha and Kate Hallsted, alumni-parent
Alex Dadant, Jim, Cindy and Emily Brengarth, Karen, John
and Amy Malizia, Paul Wagner, Terry and Cindy Durnil, Skip DuCharme, Pam
Spencer, Sharon Devine, Rob Koenig, Sue Salzer, Kathy Seay, Jeri Doty,
Lisa and Bob Jerry, Karen Rogers, Pam and John Massey, John Wetz, John
and Kim Garrett, Chuck Ashworth, Ginny Mattli, Katherine and Chuck Caldwell,
Claire and Bryan Piester, Cheryl Tekotte and her Mom, Kay and Bill Goddard,
Tuck Wong, Jacob and Christina Atchely. There are likely to be names we
missed and we're very sorry not to include you-but we sure appreciated
your help.
On to the CSC Invitational Now that
we're in the groove, its time to start thinking-and signing up-to work
the CSC Invitational, a three day meet on January 28, 29, 30, 2000. This
is another wonderful opportunity to make some money for the club and to
watch our own children swim. As should have been obvious at the Level II
meet, it takes at least 50-75 people to fully staff any swim meet. After
the great job that was done at the Level II meet, we should all be looking
forward to working together again for our Club at the end of January. Watch
for sign-up sheets at the pool. For the really anxious, call Jane Piester
for information.
Officials Clinic Announced CSC will host a clinic to train new Stroke and Turn Judges on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 109 of the School of Law on the MU Campus. At present, CSC has only 3 USA Swimming member-qualified swimming officials and that is simply not enough for the club to continue to host meets. Perhaps you noticed the stroke and turn judges, referee and starter at the Level II meet and wondered: "Who asked them to do that???" The answer is "nobody," they're volunteers, just like everyone else who works a meet. To be a swimming official, a person needs: 1. To be interested in competitive swimming and the various strokes; 2. To be a non-athlete member of USA Swimming and Missouri Valley Swimming (this costs $30 per year for an individual member or $50 a year for family membership). Membership provides insurance coverage; 3. To attend a stroke and turn workshop which goes over the swimming strokes and rules relating to them; 4. To take a written test (done at the clinic) on those strokes; 5. To work three sessions of a swim meet as an apprentice stroke and turn judge-working with more experienced swimming officials; In addition, swimming officials must be recertified each year by attending a clinic that discusses any applicable rule changes and any new developments in our sport. The clinic on January 11 will last about 2 hours and will include the certification test as well as extensive discussion of all swimming strokes. Please
contact Jim Devine at 882-7453 or 445-7256 to reserve your space at this
clinic. Stroke and Turn judges who certify at this clinic will be able
to do almost all of their apprentice work at the CSC Invitational on January
28-30.
Parents to Buy Swimming Events!!!!! Now is your chance to buy your own swimming event. Advertising revenue is a wonderful way for swim clubs to earn extra cash for their program operations. At the upcoming CSC Invitational, parents wishing to sponsor an event can do so for $10. Your name will appear in the heat sheet next to the event with the words "Sponsored by:..." If you
want more than an event, consider buying a larger advertisement in the
Heat Sheet. For this meet, a 1/4 page ad costs $25, a ½ page ad
costs $50 and a full page ad costs $100. Please pass this information on
to your employer and friends and let them get in on the fun. Contact Lisa
Schenker for more information.
Swim-A-Thon is Coming January 22, 2000 Swim-A-Thon is a registered trademark of USA Swimming and is a national program that helps clubs like ours raise money for their program operations. Swimmers ask sponsors, friends-neighbors-relatives, to pay for the swimmer to swim a certain number of lengths of the Hickman pool from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon on January 22, 2000. Under this program, CSC keeps 95% of the money that is raised by the Swim-A-Thon. The other 5% is sent to USA Swimming. Those swimmers-such as our CSC high-school boys-who cannot make the Swim-A-Thon because of high school swimming restrictions are encouraged to assist by sponsoring one of our younger non-high school swimmers. Lisa Schenker is serving as match-maker for those high school swimmers willing to sponsor a younger swimmer. More
information about Swim-A-Thon will be sent home by the coaches soon.
Parents and others are encouraged to attend the Swim-A-Thon event
on January 22.
CSC Fee Increase Set for January 1, 2000 As of January 1, 2000, CSC fees will increase. New fees are $65 for Seniors, $45 for Age Group. And no, the Y2K Bug cannot be used as an excuse for not adding the $5. Part of this fee increase is likely to go to Hickman High School for use of some of the pool equipment. The Timing System, Scoreboard and lane lines all get extensive use by both CSC and the Hickman teams. Particularly as to the Electronic Equipment (timing system and scoreboard) which tends to corrode with the dampness, repair is almost always necessary. Along with the computer equipment that CSC owns and provides, the timing system and scoreboard make our meets much more attractive to spectators and participants. The money that CSC will be paying will help offset the actual cost of those repairs. Please don't forget to include this increase in your January payment. But don't
worry: if you do forget, we'll remind you!!

Meet Coach Paul Monroe and Coach Dee Brown The stunning success of CSC swimmers at the Level II Championship was due in large measure to the dedication of our two age group coaches who, under the direction of interim head coach Phil Garverick, assisted our swimmers in improving their swimming. The fact is there are no successful swim programs without successful age group swimming. The Kansas City Blazers are the perfect example. While the Blazers publicly tout the fact that they have placed at least one athlete on each of the last four U.S. Olympic Swim Teams, they are able to do so because of the 160 swimmers that they bring to the Level II meet. All successful swim programs are pyramid-shaped with the largest number of swimmers in the age group program. This month, the Newsletter features both Coach Paul Monroe and Coach Dee Brown: News: Tell us about your swimming background. Coach Paul Monroe: I really did not start swimming until I began taking lessons at age 14. My brother-in-law swam in the late 1980's and my brother was on the Hickman team for a couple of years before I started. When I first started lessons, I could just barely tread water, but only for just a few minutes. I stuck with the lessons and spent some time taking notes on swimming videos to learn as much as I could about the sport. I joined CSC and the Hickman H.S. team as a sophomore and competed for three years with the Kewpies. Often I would jump out of the pool and run to the side to watch someone else get a best time, just as I had done. My favorite strokes were the butterfly and the breaststroke. Coach Dee Brown: I started swimming when I was 5 and swam for St. Louis USA Swimming teams and MICDS High School until I was 16. At the national level, I swam everything from the 50 to the 1650 free and even the 400 IM at the Junior Championships over the years and won the 200 and 400 meter free at the 1991 Juniors-West meet. I also qualified for Seniors in all the freestyle events and was named Rookie of the Meet at Senior Nationals in 1991 when I finished 3rd in the 200 and 5th in the 400 meter free. I also swam those two events at the Olympic Trials meet in 1992. News: How did you get into coaching? Coach Paul: I started helping with the Columbia Parks and Recreation Summer team. I continued into the regular season as a volunteer with CSC and have been an assistant with the club for the past year and a half. Coach Dee: I've had a lot of ups and downs in my swimming career. The most valuable came when I was 14 and I began enjoying swimming for myself. As an elementary education and secondary school science and math major, I'd like to instill that love of the sport in our younger swimmers. News: What is your most embarrassing moment in swimming? Coach Paul: The very first year I swam competitively, I was entered in my first long course meet at my yard time. In addition, I was entered in a senior event instead of a 13-14 event. I had only been swimming competitively about 5 months and really was not very good. With my yard time, I was seeded near the top of the event and wound up swimming next to Phil Garverick and between Phil and one of his college swimming friends. My older brother was also in the heat. I was able to keep up with those guys up until the very first stroke. Needless to say, I was a little embarrassed. Coach Dee: I can think of a couple. When I was swimming, paper suits were "french-cut" and very tiny. I can remember swimming lots of 1650 races with a "weggie" the entire distance. Once in the 1650, my lap counter dropped one of the numbers in the pool and jumped into to get it. All I saw were panickly legs kicking and scrambling in my face as I approached the wall and someone tried to drag her out. News: Over the next month, what do you expect to be doing with the swimmers in your group? Coach Paul: The rest of this month, we will be working strokes, starts and turns. We also want to build to a higher aerobic base. Our yardage per day should drop from 3500-4000 yards per day to 3000-3500 because we will be spending more time on strokes. Coach Dee: In trying to improve swimmer's strokes, as Paul mentions, my goal is to allow my swimmers to make a smooth transition to the next Age Group practice level. I have been very proud of my swimmers who have asked to move up and take on the heavier workload. When a swimmer elects to move up, they display the motivation and iniative that I think is evidence of a passionate worker. News: What do you want for your swimmers? Coach
Dee (speaking for all of our Coaches): I want them to develop a
passion for swimming. I hope to do this by developing their competence
in the water through stroke work and improved endurance. I hope to show
them to use their passion to motivate them to work hard to elevate their
performance. If kids love swimming, they are more apt to want to be good
at it. In other words, they are more willing to work hard to improve their
performance if they enjoy what they are doing. I think this passion is
important because I want them to achieve personal accomplishments as young
swimmers and because I hope that they will continue swimming as adults.
Holiday Party Slated CSC will
host a Holiday Party during the regular practice on December 21, 1999.
